A medieval city under your feet.

When work began on renovating Krakow’s Main Market Square, archaeologists found an entire layer of the medieval city preserved beneath the cobblestones. Rather than covering it back up, the city opened it — and the Rynek Underground became one of Europe’s most striking archaeological museums.

You walk nearly 4,000 square metres of it: original street surfaces, merchant stalls, foundations, and the everyday debris of a trading city. Holograms, projections and touchscreens fill in what the stones can’t — the noise of carts, the calls of traders, the rhythm of a market that connected Krakow to Venice, Constantinople and the Baltic.

What you’ll see.

Reconstructions of eleventh-century burials, traces of streets that ran here before the square existed, and artefacts that show what was traded — salt, textiles, furs, amber, coins and scales. Your guide connects the objects to the people: who worked here, what they believed, and how the excavations rewrote parts of the city’s history.

The tour lasts around 90 minutes. For groups of 15 or more, headsets are provided so everyone hears the commentary clearly.
When you climb back to the surface, the square looks different. St Mary’s Basilica and the Cloth Hall sit above seven centuries you’ve just walked through.

The space is large and well lit, more like a wide basement than a tunnel. Most visitors find it comfortable.

Entirely different. Rynek Underground is an urban archaeological site under the Main Square, about 90 minutes. Wieliczka is a vast salt mine outside Krakow requiring a half-day trip.
