Wawel is free to walk around — the courtyard, the grounds and the views over the Vistula cost nothing. But everything inside is ticketed, and this is where visitors run into trouble.
Each exhibition has its own ticket and its own timed entry slot. Tickets are released roughly a month ahead and the popular ones sell out. Arrive without a booking in summer and you may find nothing available for that day.
There’s a second issue that surprises people: the exhibitions have very few information boards. You can walk through the State Rooms and see extraordinary Flemish tapestries with almost nothing explaining what you’re looking at. A guide isn’t a luxury here — it’s the difference between seeing objects and understanding them.

The essential visit. Licensed guide, skip-the-line entry to one permanent castle exhibition, plus the Gothic cathedral where Polish kings were crowned. Climb to the Sigismund Bell and descend to the royal crypts. Best for: Travellers short on time who want the highlights done properly.
