The Best Day Trips from Krakow (And How to Choose)
Krakow is a wonderful city — but some of Poland’s most remarkable places lie just beyond it. Whether you have one spare day or a whole week, here are the day trips genuinely worth your time, and how to decide which fits your trip.
Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial
Distance: ~70 km west | Time needed: ~7 hours | Best for: Everyone 14+
The most important — and most difficult — trip you can make from Krakow. The former camp is now a memorial, and visiting it is an act of remembrance rather than tourism. A guided visit is essential: without context, much of what you see loses its meaning. Most travellers describe it as the most significant experience of their trip to Poland.

Wieliczka Salt Mine
Distance: ~15 km southeast | Time needed: ~4 hours | Best for: Families, all ages
A UNESCO-listed underground world carved from salt — vast chambers, subterranean lakes, and the astonishing St Kinga’s Chapel. It’s comfortable, accessible, and stays cool year-round, making it perfect for hot or rainy days. The easiest “wow” trip near Krakow.

Zakopane and the Tatra Mountains
Distance: ~100 km south | Time needed: Full day (~11 hours) | Best for: Nature lovers
Poland’s mountain capital, at the foot of the Tatras. Expect highlander culture, wooden architecture, the buzzing Krupówki street, cable car views, and — if you choose well — thermal pools to finish. It’s a long day, but a completely different side of Poland from the cities.
Combining trips to save time
If your schedule is tight, some trips pair well. Auschwitz and Wieliczka can be combined into a single (long but efficient) day, since neither is far from Krakow. If you’re only in the city for a couple of days, this lets you see both without sacrificing one.
How to choose
If you have ONE day
Auschwitz, if it feels important to you. Otherwise Wieliczka — it’s shorter, uplifting and suits everyone.
If you have TWO days
Auschwitz first, then Wieliczka or Zakopane. Give Auschwitz its own day if you can.
If you have THREE days
All three: Auschwitz, Wieliczka, Zakopane. This is the classic Krakow itinerary and it works beautifully.
If you’re travelling with kids
Wieliczka and Zakopane. Skip Auschwitz with young children.
Practical tips for any day trip from Krakow
Allow recovery time. Full-day trips are tiring; don’t over-schedule your evenings.
Book ahead in high season (May–September) — popular slots sell out.
Choose door-to-door pickup if you can. It saves the hassle of finding meeting points in an unfamiliar city.
Check what’s included. “From €X” prices often exclude entry tickets — always check.
